Abdoul-Wahab Bizo
I Wonder How I Got Myself Into That Situation
Nasty behind my wheel; the increasing sound of the police and the noise from my tires drifting are making my heart to beat like a drum machine. The smell of stress and fear emanated by my friends and I is comparable to a French Cologne. Now, I see that we wouldn't be in this terrible situation if I have listened to my conscience instead of David who shouted in French: "Abdoul fuis, c'est la police!!!." In another word: "You should get the H*** outta here because that is a cop following us."
My story begins on a Thursday of September 2006 in Niger (West Africa). By 2pm, four of my friends and I left school earlier because I’ve rented a car. Even though I didn't have a driver's license at this time, it was a risk that I was willing to take. In fact, my passion for cars had taken control over my conscience. I've been speeding and racing illegally in the street with the car; we were enjoying our time and it was super cool! At one moment, I noticed a car that has been following us for almost ten minutes. In a first time, it didn’t really catch my attention but I stopped just to see if that car would stop too. I thought right because the car stopped too. I told my friends what was going on and one of my friend, David, shouted that it was an undercover cop. I was so afraid to go to jail that I drove away without even make sure that it was a cop. It was the beginning of the hot pursuit.
The amount of excitement was amazing! Also, it was funny for us because the cop couldn’t catch us. At that exact moment, I felt like the African Michael Schumacher. But when the policeman called for backups, the game became reality. I heard a big “Boom” and I started to lose control of the car. The cop had hit my car with his bumper. My friends started to shout and curse. Mamadou, who was one on my friend in the car, was so scared that jumped off the car while I was driving. I couldn’t believe that he just did that. At that moment, I said to myself: “Hollywood should come and see what’s happening because this could be the next Fast&Furious.” In fact, I felt like I was in a movie.
So, he jumped off the car, one cop arrested him and punched him right in his face. After we saw that, another of my friends said to me: “hey Abdoul, this is insane. We better not get caught.” After 45 mins of pursuit, I was able to distance myself from the cops, but we had one last problem to deal with; how were we going to escape our friend? We couldn't tell our parents because the situation would have been worst. So I decided to call an uncle who was an police officer to help me (without telling my parents) and he did!
It's an event of my life that I will never forget. In fact, seven years later, we still talk about this event with my friends because it was unbelievable!
